OTTAWA, Ontario – September 5, 2017.  The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) invites Canadians to nominate a local street, neighbourhood, or public space as part of its Great Places in Canada contest. The annual contest celebrates local pride of place, by recognizing the spaces across the country that make Canadian communities unique.

Since 2010, Great Places in Canada has received over 900 nominations, demonstrating the enthusiasm that citizens have for their communities, and highlighting the contributions of planners, who play a critical role in creating and shaping these important spaces.

“Each year, the Great Places in Canada contest receives dozens of nominations from across the country, each motivated to share their community’s unique spaces and places of pride,” said Eleanor Mohammed, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. “The Great Places in Canada contest shines a light on the inspiring work that professional planners undertake to encourage, create, and safeguard communities, public spaces, and the built environment.”

Ways to Win
Throughout the month of September, CIP welcomes and encourages communities of all sizes to nominate their Great Place. All nominations are judged by a jury of professional planners, who will award the title of Great Place in Canada to one Great Street, Great Neighbourhood, and Great Public Space. The municipalities home to the winning Great Places will receive a plaque which can be displayed on site. Additionally, the public will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite street, neighbourhood, and public space. The place with the most votes in its respective category will receive the title of Great Place in Canada – People’s Choice.

All those who nominate a Great Place in Canada will also be entered into a draw to win a $300.00 prepaid credit card, and a one-year subscription to Plan Canada Magazine, the premier planning magazine in Canada. Two winners will be randomly selected from all received nominations. Furthermore, the individual who nominates the place with the most votes across all three categories will also win a $300.00 prepaid credit card and a subscription to Plan Canada.

2017 Timeline
The nomination period will extend from September 5, 2017 to October 4, 2017. CIP will make all nominations live online and invite Canadians to vote on their favourite street, neighbourhood, or public space from October 11-27, 2017. Winners will be announced on November 8, 2017 in conjunction with World Town Planning Day.
