Who We Are

The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) works on behalf of the more than 7,500 planning professionals nation-wide, serving as the voice of Canada’s planning community. Since its beginning in 1919, CIP has grown into a federated national organization with Provincial and Territorial Institutes and Associations across Canada, and with links to planning associations worldwide.

Planning addresses the use of land, resources, facilities and services in ways that secure the physical, economic and social efficiency, health and well-being of urban and rural communities. Our members work in both the public service and the private sector, across fields such as land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, heritage conservation, social planning, transportation planning, and economic development.

Vision, Mission and Values

The 2012-2015 Strategic Plan presents the CIP Vision, Mission and Values Statement:

Improved quality of life through excellence in professional planning.

To advance planning in Canada and abroad by serving, educating, informing and engaging our members.

Integrity • Innovation • Collaboration

CIP Realigns

The needs of the planning profession continue to evolve.  CIP is currently working with members, and the Provincial and Territorial Institutes and Associations to review its purpose and governance structure. To satisfy the provisions of the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, CIP has initiated a process to approve Articles of Continuance that will form the basis of a new constitution and new By-laws for the Institute.
