City of Fernie
Fernie, BC
Neighbourhood
Fernie was incorporated in 1904 and now has a population of over four thousand residents. The municipality of Fernie covers a smaller footprint than the social and economic community of Fernie, as many would consider West Fernie, Fernie Alpine Resort and other outlying rural areas as part of our community.
Fernie is a community that is very much informed by its natural environment. Nestled at the base of the Lizard Range, with the Elk River flowing through, our community's culture is largely influenced by nature and outdoor recreation.
The following organizations have been champions of the neighbourhood:
- Fernie Trails Alliance: advocate for, develop and maintain trails networks.
- Fernie Rod and Gun Club: wildlife conservation, fostering of wilderness values.
- Fernie Mountain Bike Club: building and maintaining trails, creating a riding community.
Fernie's official community plan and integrated community sustainability plan both ensure the community has a walkable, bike-able feel that embraces an active, outdoorsy lifestyle. Fernie has a cohesive feel, so much that the entire municipality and nearby outlying areas feel like one community.
