Representing a membership of approximately 7000 planning professionals across Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) has been dedicated to the advancement of responsible planning since 1919.
Mission Statement
The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is a collaborative national federation that advances professional planning excellence through the delivery of membership and public services in Canada and abroad.
Working on behalf of planners and the planning profession, CIP serves as the national voice of Canada's planning community. In its capacity as the national professional institute and certification body for the planning profession in Canada, CIP has a mandate from its membership to:
- champion and lead progress and change in planning practice;
- act as the authoritative voice and the primary information and knowledge sharing network for planners;
- address issues of importance to the planning profession and/or the public interest;
- institute national standards for training, certification and best practices achieved through continued professional development of its membership; and
- deliver relevant and contemporary benefits and services to its members.
Our Members work in the public service and the private sector, in a wide variety of fields including land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, heritage conservation, social planning, transportation planning and economic development.

- CIP members have responded with concern and compassion to the open letter circulated in our last e-mail blast, related to the crisis in Haiti. Canadian planners are troubled by the devastating situation following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake there on January 12, 2010 and are asking what CIP and the Canadian planning profession can do.
- The Planning Profession is changing.
- Jeanne Wolfe, Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and Membre émérite of the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec died peacefully at her home in Montréal on December 20, 2009. She was known and loved for her tireless promotion of urban planning in Québec, in Canada and the world over, for her commitment to human well-being in public policy and education, and for her generosity and her wit.
- As a part of the Institute's commitment to advocacy and the development of best practices, we are proud to present CIP's Policy on Climate Change.
- Consisting of the envisioned future of CIP, along with measurable goals and milestones, this plan serves as a guide in focusing our energies on serving the needs of our membership and the planning profession as a whole.
- The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects in cooperation with Canadian municipalities, wish to promote public and private awareness of that role. For this reason, an Urban Design Awards program has been established to recognize individuals, organizations, firms and projects that have contributed to the quality of life in our Canadian cities and their sustainability.
