CIP's Healthy Communities Background

The Canadian Institute of Planners has been active in promoting and developing healthy communities’ best practices.

CIP formed a national sub-committee, known as the Healthy Communities sub-committee, under the auspices of the National Affairs Advisory Committee. This committee has been driving the program by implementing the partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) and facilitating CIP’s involvement in the Healthy Canada by Design CLASP initiative. For more information about CIP’s Healthy Communities program click here.

The healthy communities program is also known as “Taking the Pulse” and our work is guided by a recently completed member survey called “Taking the Pulse: Benchmarking Planning for Healthier Communities,” the partnership with HSFC and our involvement with other Healthy Canada by Design CLASP partners.

Another part of CIP’s commitment to this program has been presentations, usually in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and other CLASP partners, and given to numerous health and planning audiences. You may find a list of the presentations here.

CIP also recognized the importance of sharing existing information on healthy communities and has developed a library of articles, studies, tools, and web links to help guide the planning and development of healthy communities. These resources can be found in the CIP Gateway to Healthy Communities Information.
