TLN Library

The Learning Net Library is a collection of resources for Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) Opportunities.  Currently, it contains a listing of planning-related nonfiction and fiction films.  The listings are not exhaustive and will grow over time with your help by adding new and as-yet-undiscovered planning-related films.   Should you come across a film that you think should be listed, please send a note to Dan Wallace (danwallace@tnrd.bc.ca) with a brief description of the relevance of the film to planners/planning so that we can spread the word.

Simply watching a film, whether nonfiction or fiction will not be eligible for structured learning units.  However, planning a group activity around watching a planning-related film and holding a discussion as to its relevance to planners/planning could be a fun and affordable opportunity for structured learning units. In this case, an organized Affiliate-sponsored CPL Movie Night to watch and discuss the film’s relationship to planning, with peers and colleagues in an organized setting (whether in-person or by conference call) would be eligible for structured learning units. If you are interested in attending or holding a CPL Movie Night, please contact your Affiliate’s CPL representative.

Watching a film independent of an organized CPL event and without an ensuing group discussion as to its relevance to planners/ planning could be a source of self-directed learning units, provided the film encompasses topic areas which advance knowledge, skills or abilities with respect to the theory, methods, and practice of professional planning (such as the nonfiction titles listed here).  Similar to self-directed reading, discretion regarding the suitability of the media is required.

In many ways, this is very similar to another fun CPL opportunity: book clubs!  Reading a planning-related book, outside of your day-to-day professional responsibilities, is a source of self-directed learning units.  While taking part in an organized discussion of the book with colleagues, whether in person or remotely, is a source of structured learning units.

The “How to Prepare for Munch and Learn Events” checklist is another resource provided in the TLN Library.  It is a step-by-step checklist for organizing CPL events that could be helpful for would-be Movie Night organizers.

Be sure to check back for updates, and if you hold a CPL Movie Night, please drop a note to Dan Wallace (danwallace@tnrd.bc.ca) and share your thoughts on the experience. It’s all about fulfilling the needs and requirements for Continuous Professional Learning in creative, enjoyable, and cost-effective ways, and it’s fun to get together and watch movies or share a good read.
