Benefits of Membership
The Canadian Institute of Planners is dedicated to advancing the planning profession and providing services to planners across Canada and around the world. Governed by a volunteer Council of professional planners, and working for and with our 6,800 members, the CIP Office administers and delivers a wide range of services to the membership, which includes:
- Professional certification based on national standards and a code of professional practice
- Professional portability: CIP certification enables you to work across Canada and facilitates membership through reciprocal agreement with planning institutes abroad

Membership in CIP is obtained through seven Affiliates that work collaboratively with CIP to set and administer agreed upon national membership standards. The Affiliates also deliver a wide range of services at the local, provincial and regional levels, including conferences, workshops, publications and social events.
