CIP First Nations Initiative
Introduction
In 2003, the First Nations Land Management Resource Centre (FNLMRC) and the Canadian Institute of Planners signed an agreement with the purpose of building greater planning capacity in First Nations communities. Since then, CIP has made important efforts to build stronger relationships with the FNLMRC and other stakeholder groups engaged in helping First Nations improve their planning practices to advance the quality of life and sustainability of their communities.
CIP's First Nations Subcommittee has been involved in a series of events and continues to play an active role in building planning capacity among First Nations across Canada by collaborating on joint projects, and by mobilizing the expertise of CIP and its members to promote progress in their planning practices. In addition, CIP is working to engage other organizations through mutual agreements to support such capacity building projects.
CIP is also engaged in discussions with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) working towards a possible partnership, which so far has included CIP participation at the INAC B.C. Region Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) Workshop, in May 2007, and in another CCP workshop in Prince George, B.C. in September 2007.
The outcome of these Workshops and CIP’s collaboration with INAC, is the Comprehensive Community Planning for First Nations in British Columbia document. You can download this document from the following website.
A clear message arising from CIP’s work with First Nations and related stakeholder groups is that many First Nations communities need to be incorporating better planning practices. CIP strives to assume an active role in promoting good planning and connecting qualified CIP members to work with First Nations communities.
As part of its continuing work to help build planning capacity in First Nations communities across Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) has compiled a roster of planners available in the Employment Opportunities section of our website.
