Environmental Planning: Lessons from Guyana

In October 2005 I moved to Guyana, South America to undertake a World Link Internship placement with the Municipal Governance Management Program (MGMP). World Link is a program offered through the Canadian Institute of Planners and is funded by CIDA. MGMP is a bilateral initiative between the government of Guyana and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Financial support is provided by CIDA. The province of Nova Scotia is our sister province. Nova Scotia sends consultants regularly to provide technical assistance to many of the MGMP projects and Guyanese staff visit Nova Scotia for mutual learning opportunities.

Post-Conflict Planning in Bosnia and Herezegovina

Whether it was the war in Afghanistan, the tsunami in South Asia, the recent earthquake in the Kashmir region, or the continued civil conflict in Sudan, we've become accustomed to hearing about (and supporting) large-scale international relief efforts in postconflict and post-disaster regions. However, while immediate aid is important and necessary, we rarely think about the long term. A good example is the location of refugee camps, which are typically set up to address short-term humanitarian needs often with little strategic consideration about location. However, these camps are increasingly becoming long-term or even permanent settlements, making their location – in terms of their relation to other urban settlements, public services, transportation routes, and physical infrastructure – vital.

Kampala, Uganda – Edible Landscape Project

In September 2005, I landed on the Entebbe airstrip in Uganda, after a week orientation and project briefing at the University of McGill, Montreal (Canada). Immediately through the disorientating drive into Kampala I noticed the lush vegetation, the bustling markets and most importantly the dependence on Urban Agriculture (UA). Each passing household was growing matooke (a form of banana), maize, yams, and livestock or poultry.

Integrating HIV/AIDS into Strategic Planning Processes: A Perspective From Ghana

I recently completed a six-month WorldLink internship, a program of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the Canada Youth Employment Strategy. Its goal is twofold: make young people aware of global issues, and encourage them to contribute to international cooperation. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana supervised the internship.

FCM Internship at Asante Akim North District Assembly, Ghana

In mid-September 2005, I arrived in Ghana to begin a six-month FCM internship with the Development Planning Office of the Asante Akim North District Assembly, a local government authority in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. After an orientation at the FCM office in Ottawa, I had come to Ghana with a clear idea of what I would be doing over the next six months. Following the work of last year's FCM intern at Asante Akim North, my role was to further work on the framework of the district's medium-term development plan and then begin writing a draft of the development plan. However, shortly after my arrival here, it became apparent that there was an absence of reliable, current data required to write the plan. The District is made up of over 100 communities, with incomplete and inconsistent information on them. As a result, the focus of my internship became a district-wide data collection program. The data collection would not only address the lack of data for the development plan, but also broaden the District's capacity to plan and implement programmes and projects. The data collected would furthermore aid in widening the revenue base and ensure efficiency in revenue collection required for sustained development.

Stage professionnel en coopération municipale au Viêtnam

(article available in french only)

Hanoi.
