Default Search
The form has been preset with the most commonly-used search options for this database. As a result, you can simply perform your search by typing your keyword or phrase and clicking the Search button.
Search Tips
All of the search input areas allow you to type in partial words, whole words or sentence fragments that make up your query or search statement.
The Plan Canada search engine allows you to make use of the wildcard character "%" which represents one or more unknown characters. Case is ignored in all searches.
Examples:
To search for "smith" or "smyth"
sm%th
To find "structure" or "structural"
"structur"
If searching for phrase like "Urban Design for Intensification"
"Urban Design % Intensification"
Advanced Search Form
The advanced form allows keyword searching by author, Plan Canada volume number and article subject. Each field functions in the same way as the default search function. See the advanced search tips on how to use the wildcard character.
Multiple fields can be used simultaneously. If more than one field is used, all search statements must be found in the same article listing for it is to show up as a search result. Logically speaking, the fields are connected by AND not OR.
If a field is left blank, no restriction will be set for that field type.
Browsing Search Results
Number of records per page - Sometimes when you perform a search, the system returns a large number of records. If the number is especially large, you don't want the system to try and display them all at once, as this would slow down your search. For this reason, the number of records displayed per page is limited. Thus, when search results are greater than twenty, only the first twenty records will be shown per page (most recently published articles appear first). You will be able to click the Next icon to view the next 20 artices. To return to the top of the list, use the Previous Page icon .
