Brief Biography

Mark is the President of Holland Planning Innovation Inc - a consulting firm specialising in community planning and real estate development projects. Mark is also a faculty member at Vancouver Island University where he helped launch and now teaches in its Masters in Community Planning Program. Mark began his career as a city planner in the City of Vancouver, leading its work on sustainable development and the Olympic Village, and was later the founder of the City's Sustainability Office. He then co-founded two planning and design consulting companies (Holland Barrs / HB Lanarc) - both of whom were recognized nationally as leaders in innovative planning, before he and his business partners sold the company. He has served as the Vice President of Development for two companies - Storm Mountain Developments and the New Monaco LP, where he has managed the design and approvals processes for large master¬ planned communities on Vancouver Island and in the Okanagan Valley. Mark holds professional degrees in both Landscape Architecture, and Community and Regional Planning. Mark's projects have won the top planning awards in the country on several occasions and he was named BC's Planner of the Year in 2010. In 2013, he was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to field of sustainability and planning for Canadian municipalities. In 2021, he was awarded one of the top awards at Vancouver Island University for his teaching and mentoring.
