What are your hopes for the future of the planning profession?
I would hope that professional planners would be respected by the leadership in the communities where they work, by members of the multidisciplinary teams they engage with to make communities better, and by the public they ultimately serve.
What are a few of your favourite places?
  • Downtown St. John’s NL for the crazy quilt that it is.
  • Large cities – their diversity always results in rich cultural experiences (art, music, food).
  • San Miguel de Allende in Central Mexico is such a beautiful and vibrant, small city.
  • Almost anywhere in France, especially Brittany and Provence.
  • Greek Islands – pick one!
Which person has most inspired your work in planning?
There are many, but Ian McHarg comes to mind. I enjoy spatial analysis, he figured it out without a GIS tech to help him. Generally, I admire planners who maintain their vision of creating good communities rather than getting lost in bureaucracy.
Anything else we should know about you?
I like to shake things up. Planning is my second career in which I have held a variety of positions in public, private, and non-profit sectors. And I may not be finished yet.
