International Outreach

Over the past three decades, CIP has engaged in a variety of international activities aimed at three major goals:

  • Education and awareness-building: influencing policy related to international urban affairs, export development and international urban cooperation;
  • Employment and business development: generating employment and business opportunities for CIP members; and
  • International cooperation and development assistance: contributing to Canadian awareness of the state of planning abroad and participating in projects that advance the profession at home and abroad.

The Caribbean has been a focus of CIP’s international activities since 1984. We have worked across the region to enhance the recognition of planning and to build broad support among professionals, decision-makers and the public for the value of good planning practice. Beginning in 1999, CIP has worked directly with partner organizations in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Cuba to strengthen planning practice in low-income communities vulnerable to natural disasters.
