Local Approaches to Climate Mitigation and Adaptation

This session gave a brief overview of local government approaches to climate change, with snapshot examples from Sweden, Japan, Finland, UK and New Zealand. It was followed by a Canadian case study- Dockside Green, an example of sustainable development, which has evolved over an 18-year period.

Improving Accessibility in the Built Environment

In this session, approaches to accessibility were explored from two perspectives. The first was a holistic analysis of accessibility, exploring how planning can create truly accessible places, using case studies such as London's 2012 Olympic Park revitalization project. The second was another site-specific analysis of Chester, a 1st century CE Roman-British city. 

Optimizing Outcomes for Public Transport Mega-projects

Recently, there have been a number of city shaping transport projects in Australian cities where an integrated transport and land use approach must be considered in project development. This presentation looked at the role of governance and genuine engagement (or collaboration) using the Sydney Metro West rail project as a case study.

In this session, delegates heard from health and planning practitioners about the impact of the built environment on the physical and mental health of elderly people, and methods and approaches to overcome them, using examples from Canada and the UK.

Engaging with Indigenous Communities

This session presented work being done with the City of Yellowknife and its work with the Dene First Nation and an analysis of the Northern Ontario Growth Plan and its approach to including Indigenous communities. 

Small Town Main Street Sustainability

This session used practical community projects representing various sizes and locales across Canada to show how smaller communities can create jobs, provide entrepreneurial opportunities and harness their local resources to promote a sense of pride and ownership.

Inclusionary Coastal Regional Planning

Planning Smart Energy Communities
