OTTAWA, Ontario – May 31, 2018 – The Canadian Institute of Planners is very pleased to award Jessie Hemphill with its prestigious 2018 CIP President’s Award for Young Planners, which recognizes the outstanding professional success and achievement of a Canadian planner under the age of 35.
“Ms. Hemphill is an amazing individual and an incredible asset to Canada’s planning profession,” said Eleanor Mohammed, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. “Her work is meaningful and is having a positive impact on the communities in which she invests her time. With so many great accomplishments as a young planner, I’m looking forward to seeing what she will achieve over the course of her career.”
Jessie Hemphill (Tlali'ila'ogwala, or "Bridge Between the Worlds") is from the 'Nakwaxda'xw, Ligwitlda'xw, and Métis nations. Raised in Port Hardy, BC, on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, Hemphill’s love for her community led her to a career in community planning and facilitation, working with First Nations and organizations all over Canada through her company, Alderhill Planning Inc. She has recently completed her Master of Community Planning degree at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. A life-long volunteer with a focus on equity, Jessie co-founded the British Columbia Comprehensive Community Planning Mentorship Program and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the 'Kawatsi Economic Development Corporation. She is also a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners' Indigenous Community Planning Committee, as well as the Indigenous Advisory Group for the Indigenous Community Development National Strategy.
Hemphill will be presented with the award at the joint Canadian Institute of Planners and Manitoba Professional Planners Institute national planning conference held in Winnipeg, July 19-22, 2018. For complete event details and registration, please visit
