More than 366,000 residents call Markham home and benefit from its rich heritage, culturally diverse environment, vibrant local economy and focus on quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Markham is currently seeking 1 (one) urban design professional,1 (one) landscape architecture professional, and 1 (one) architecture professional to serve as members of the Markham Design Review Panel, providing expertise, insights and feedback on quality design in developments across the City. \u00a0Markham\u2019s Design Review Panel serves an advisory role to the Planning &amp; Urban Design department by providing recommendations on complex and significant proposed developments in the City\u2019s intensification areas, Secondary Plan areas, and special character areas of the City. The Panel may also review special projects as needed. The Panel promotes design excellence in Markham through regular, structured reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that this is an unpaid, voluntary position.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Term and Time Commitment:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The City of Markham is currently seeking three (3) new members to serve on an eight (8) member Panel of design professionals. Successful candidates will be appointed until December 2026, with the opportunity to extend membership for the future term.<\/p>\n<p>The Panel is convened monthly on an as-needed basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Duties and Responsibilities:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide objective and expert design recommendations to City Staff, applicants, and their consultants regarding the physical and functional configuration of the site, including proposed buildings, landscapes, and streetscapes, including their interface with the public realm and the surrounding context;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure development proposals are consistent with the goals and objectives of the City\u2019s Official Plan and other applicable policies and guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Qualifications:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 10 years of relevant and practical professional experience in the field of architecture, urban design and\/or landscape architecture;<\/li>\n<li>Have membership and\/or certification in relevant professional designations, such as OALA, OAA, and\/or OPPI, CIP etc.<\/li>\n<li>Be able to work within a multi-disciplinary environment;<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated experience in evaluating and commenting on development projects of varying scope, complexity and contexts; and<\/li>\n<li>Have a good understanding of the municipal planning environment and the development approval process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Other Requirements:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a demonstrated commitment to, and interest in, design excellence in the Markham community.<\/li>\n<li>Be available for scheduled meetings to achieve quorum for each session.<\/li>\n<li>Have access to a computer for participation in virtual meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Be available for a minimum of one in-person session each calendar year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Submissions:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The application deadline is February 27, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and curriculum vitae in PDF format. Please identify the position of interest within the cover letter. Applicants may be requested to submit a voluntary diversity questionnaire and respond to questions about their motivation for participating on the Panel.<\/p>\n<p>Cover letters should include an overview of the applicant\u2019s interest and qualifications related to architecture, urban design and\/or landscape architecture, with specific reference to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic credentials, membership\/associations\/certifications with applicable professional organizations;<\/li>\n<li>Experience in architecture\/urban design\/landscape design and peer review for a variety of project types;<\/li>\n<li>Understanding of the urban design and planning pressures within the Markham community, as well as a familiarity with the City itself; and<\/li>\n<li>Knowledgeable in current and future urban design issues and topics more broadly speaking, applied through a practical lens to achieve design excellence in the critique of proposed development.<\/li>\n<li><em>Diversity:<\/em>\n<p><em>The City of Markham is committed to inclusive, accessible and barrier free employment practices and to creating a workplace that reflects and supports the diversity of the community we serve.
