Canada has historically relied on its ability to attract – and, with varying degrees of success – retain immigrants to grow our population. But are the drivers influencing Canada’s quality of life are under threat? The discussion will examine key factors that helped Canada grow and detail challenges affecting quality of life that lie ahead. Canada’s economy, and our sense of national identity, has transformed beyond recognition in recent decades. What can we learn from Canada’s Indigenous peoples as well as other jurisdictions to embrace a multi-generational worldview? The panel will explore the potential for planners to embrace these challenges by working with government, business leaders and other key institutions to formulate policies to guide population growth and meet a goal of developing a future for citizens and newcomers alike that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable for all.
