Many First Nations are experiencing increased development pressure within their reserve lands, as well as a desire among Members to return to their communities to be closer to families and other kin. This increased pressure brings to light the need for thoughtful planning and design considerations to create sustainable, prosperous communities. Land Use Plans are a recognized guidance tool that many First Nations have in place to guide the physical development and preservation of their reserve lands. Many are also in the process of updating these documents based on significant land use changes and needs. First Nations are now beginning to recognize and call for the development of design guidelines so that development happens in a way that respects and honours their history, culture and teachings. This session aims to explore how Indigenous Knowledge systems and world views must be integrated into planning and community design to support self-determination.
