Join our team as a Development Planner at the City of Edmonton, where you’ll be accountable for the delegated authority of decision-making and problem resolution for Development Permit applications. What will you do?
- Review and render decisions on development permit applications in accordance with City of Edmonton Zoning Bylaw, Municipal Government Act, statutory plans, and other relevant guidelines and policies
- Analyze planning proposal details, negotiate with applicants and exercise discretionary authority in consultation with the Program Manager, and conduct inspections as required
- Liaise with and coordinate development reviews with other civic departments and outside agencies
- Facilitate, chair, and manage Development Pre-application meetings
- Prepare reports and attend the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board hearings as required
- Prepare and present synopsis on development proposals to the Edmonton Design Committee
- Respond to land use planning inquiries, either verbally or in writing, from City Council, the public, private companies, and other City employees
- Participate and provide advisory services in meeting with the development industry representatives, community groups, lawyers, engineers and other industry professionals
- Participate with other Planners and Program Managers in providing commentary of proposed Zoning Bylaw Amendments as it relates to successful implementation
- Provide information and advice to front facing customers at the Development Permit Counter of Customer Service Centre
- Provide advice to Planning Technician staff, including zoning regulation interpretations, and development review intake and review procedures
- Research zoning issues related to Zoning clearances, business licenses, and compliance certificates
- Problem resolution – balancing and resolving a range of often conflicting interests and goals (i.e. City interests, interests of the public, and of applicants)
- Contribute and participate in ongoing process improvement meetings and committees as required
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field
- 2 years of experience in development approvals, with a focus on residential and/or commercial projects
Assets:
- Architectural design experience would be an asset
- Membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners or Alberta Development Officers Association is an asset
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw, statutory regulations, Municipal Government Act, Area Structure Plans, Neighbourhood Structure Plans, Area Redevelopment Plan and policies as it relates to development planning
- Demonstrate ability to make sound and valid decisions on the development proposals and permitting processes and issues
- Sound understanding of the project management process in the development review process for permit applications
- Demonstrate ability to manage multiple development projects and other assigned work effectively and efficiently
- Proven written and verbal communications skills
- Skillful in finding solutions, solving problems, negotiation and resolving conflict
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and customer service skills
- Good working knowledge of Google Applications and Microsoft Office Suite

Work Environment:
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week
Salary: $48.767 – $61.623 (Hourly); $85,915.260 – $108,564.320 (Annually)
