This panel will share research and insights concerning urban resilience, climate crisis adaptation, planning, and equity. The objective is to examine whether we are on track to build and enhance the resilience capacity needed to meet the complex, interconnected challenges that affect our communities. Planning practice, as the key conduit between theory and implementation in communities, plays an important role in the effort to mainstream urban resilience. Panel members will report on recent research they have conducted on various aspects of resilience. Research underway at the University of British Columbia examines the mainstreaming of urban resilience in Canada. UBC’s Centre for Environmental Assessment, in partnership with the University of Waterloo and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, has also examined the state of climate change adaptation efforts within municipalities. Research in uWaterloo’s School of Planning has focused on the critical planning roles of climate change and equity.
