Quebec’s community housing ecosystem is unique, shaped by citizen-driven efforts and collaboration among non-profits, municipalities, and community groups. This approach has enabled the construction of over 100,000 community housing units despite funding challenges. This session will highlight how these partnerships foster resilience and innovation, setting Quebec apart as a model for community-oriented development. The presentation will explore Quebec’s community housing ecosystem, detailing its evolution, key players, and lessons for adaptation. It will begin with the ecosystem’s roots in 1960s citizen activism, highlighting the role of specialized non-profits in building affordable housing. An overview of current stakeholders—non-profits, co-ops, municipalities, and others—will follow, emphasizing collaboration and progressive planning. Strategies for adapting to new government policies, including innovative financing and land control, will be discussed. Attendees will gain insights applicable to other regions facing similar challenges. A Q&A section will encourage further discussion and knowledge exchange.
