Toronto’s transit system plays an integral part in connecting people and communities across the region. Public transit ridership is expected to increase significantly as the city continues to grow. The TTC’s capital investment programs aim to expand its system to better support the growing population and ridership. Work includes expanding subway stations, improving accessibility, and building new facilities and supporting infrastructure to operate transit more safely and efficiently. The success of these projects relies on various development and property acquisition strategies for finding the space to fit this infrastructure. This presentation will include a focused discussion on the challenges and proactive approaches taken to expand the TTC’s transit infratructure and integrate into third-party developments in the City of Toronto, showing examples of successful projects. We will discuss how cities can accommodate growing and essential transit infrastructure in dense urban areas to ensure a safe, efficient, and accessible public transit system.
