Over 122 First Nations across Canada have rejected land control imposed by the Indian Act by developing and ratifying their own land law, called a Land Code. The adoption of a Land Code through the historic Framework Agreement on First Nations Land Management Act is a significant step for a Nation to resume control over their lands, natural resources, and environment. This session will provide a high-level overview of what Land Code is and how Nations have been successfully using Land Use Plans to undertake land governance. Further, Colette Isaac, the Lands Director from Moose Deer Point First Nation will share their knowledge and experience with their respective land use planning processes under Land Code governance.
