Community parks are the basic units of the green network providing the community recreational needs and connections. Over the last 40 years, community park amenities were developed in partnership with communities under the City of Edmonton’s Neighbourhood Park Development Program (NPDP). Unfortunately, this model placed significant demand on the community and had the unintended consequence of creating inequity across neighbourhoods. The Community Parks Framework was developed in 2022 as the City’s approach to prioritizing the development and renewal of community park amenities. The Framework provides a needs-based and equitable model, allowing the City to direct investment in areas of the city that are underserved.
