September 15, 2025 – The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) welcomes the federal government’s announcement to establish Build Canada Homes, a new central agency aimed at stimulating housing construction and investment, and addressing the housing affordability crisis in Canada.
CIP is pleased to see alignment with many of the recommendations from our pre-budget submission and the BCH Market Sounding consultation. In particular, CIP applauds the focus on utilizing federal lands for housing types that are most challenging to build, such as non-market and supportive housing, as well as the addressing of specific measures aimed at addressing Indigenous and Northern housing needs, where the need is most acute.
“We note the undertaking to adopt an all levels of government approach to ensure these new units are built with the necessary infrastructure and wrap-around support services to create permanently affordable, whole communities for those most in need of safe, stable housing,” said Lesley Cabott RPP, FCIP, ICD D, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners.
CIP also commends the emphasis on scaling Canadian innovation and construction in prefabricated and modular housing. This approach will not only expedite the delivery of new housing units but also create job opportunities and foster growth during a challenging economic time.
CIP and Canadian professional planners look forward to leveraging their expertise to support the advancement of Build Canada Homes projects in communities across Canada.
