The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) launches policies on healthy communities and climate change

Ottawa, November 8 – The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is pleased to announce the launch of two policies that define the role that planning and planners have in meeting critically important challenges facing Canada’s built and natural environments.
The Healthy Communities and Climate Change policies are a call to action for planners to realize CIP’s vision of a healthy and sustainable Canada through individual, collective, and collaborative planning practices. The policies respectively:

  • Establish CIP’s goal for achieving healthy communities and a climate-stable future across Canada;
  • Set objectives that are needed to achieve these goals in our built, natural, and social environments; and
  • Define and describe the roles and responsibilities of today’s professional planners in meeting those objectives.

President of CIP-ICU Eleanor Mohamed RPP, MCIP said:

“The launch of today’s policies reaffirms our national commitment as professionals to tackle the most pressing and complex challenges at the heart of our communities. Our members are proud of our leadership and I am confident that our profession’s commitment will further resonate with communities, governments, and all sectors of society. We are very proud of the substantial member contributions undertaken to develop these important and timely policies.”

The development of the policies was led by CIP’s Healthy Communities and Climate Change Committees, through consultation with professional planners, health practitioners, climate change researchers, academics, advocates, and other partner organizations and experts using interviews, surveys, and focus groups.

CIP will use these policies as a basis for future policy and advocacy work, partnership building, resource enabling, and to develop its Continued Professional Learning (CPL) program. It will monitor and adapt these programs based on findings from continued outreach activities with its members.
