About the Planning School
The School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) has been preparing planners since 1970. Students learn by doing through collaborative teamwork, experiential pedagogy, and course-based projects with real-world clients.
SURP is part of the Faculty of Arts and Science and is professionally accredited by the Professional Standards Board on behalf of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Graduates are eligible for professional registration across Canada and, through arrangements with the American Institute of Certified Planners, in the United States.
Degrees & Programs
Queen’s accredited two-year Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MPL) develops the knowledge and skills students need to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges. Students can specialize in Land Use and Real Estate, Environmental Planning, or Health and Social Planning, and choose a course-only, report, or thesis pathway.
An internship in the spring/summer term between the two years is available. Students work with real-world clients and complete professional internships with government and other organizations.
The doctoral program in Geography and Planning supports advanced research with faculty in the Department of Geography and Planning. Applicants should identify a potential supervisor whose research aligns with their interests before applying.
